The Sun at Home

Our Growth: Brunch and Boots

Nadir Baaset February 15, 2021

It’s 9. p.m. in the Kirkwood apartment/ makeshift test kitchen. Chefs come alive when the sun goes down. The Our Growth pop-up brought me on to do a campaign for their annual “Brunch and Boots” pop-up event, which featured a donation drive to get suitable boots for the city’s unhoused folks before winter.

Series

As Dawit and Mat (the minds and hands behind Our Growth) get to cooking through the full menu, I’m just exploring their space, trying to find the moments. The point is- this is who they are. The energy they bring in the kitchen is exactly who they are. It’s what the people who know them love about them.

The food is done and plated. We’ve got hugely aromatic Teff Cinnamon Waffles, a tangy Passion Fruit Mousse, and the best omelette I’ve ever had. Oh and I could never forget the Pão de Queijo. It’s their fault I’m addicted.

We’ve got another set of content too, not just BTS: a series showing the experience we were selling. A worldwide brunch experience that you could take and enjoy at home.

To create our world, I dragged the wood-slat dining table to the middle of the room, turned on the sun, and got to work. Dawit is the expert at plating, so I had him set the food while I designed the table setting. Mat brewed and set the yerba mate, the coffee, and fresh blood orange juice to complete the scene.

as if you were sitting on the porch, enjoying the morning sun.

These three series of photos, from one shoot, was the base media for multiple posts driving sales and donations.

Jay Palmer Ahmed

Now this shoot was the epitome of impromptu.

Jay DM’ed me after work, saying he had some forms to drop off. I know he’s got the antibodies, so he’s good to pull up. We poured a couple glasses of Julienas 2018 a chatted for a bit. Snowboarding, Alessia Cara, buying too many clothes online, we talked for a good minute before I had to bust out the camera and take a few shots. Jay’s a natural born model: comfortable with posing, aware of his body, and super collaborative with ideas and feedback. He’s got amazing taste, so we didn’t even have to adjust his wardrobe for this shoot. We had a lot of fun, and are definitely gonna work again.

I didn’t use a flash for these shots. My FalconEyes RX18TD was my key light, set to 3000k, flown above Jay on a rolling C-stand with a hollywood arm. I really wanted to lean into the warm, ““cinematic”” tones, and the quality of light the fixture produces is outstanding. Plus, its light weight and small footprint makes it easy to use in a tight spaces without a ton of grip. I had a small LED panel behind me camera left to get an eye light going.
